What are shin splints?

An overuse condition affecting the tibialis anterior muscle at the front of the tibia (shin) resulting in the fibres of the muscle pulling at their boney attachment causing pain and inflammation.

The following factors in combination will contribute to Shin splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome):

  • Excessive pronation (foot rolling inwards)
  • Excessive supination (foot rolling outwards)
  • Incorrect footwear
  • Excessive training
  • Running on hard surfaces
  • Reduced flexibility over the ankle joint

How to treat Shin Splints?

By analysing the underlying Biomechanical conditions that are contributing to this condition and controlling them with prescriptive Orthotics together with local physical therapy e.g ice massage together they are an effective treatment combination in reducing your symptoms.
