What is it Metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia is a common overuse injury. The term describes pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot. It is often thought of as a symptom of other conditions, rather than as a specific disease.

The foot pain tends to affect the balls of the foot close to the metatarsals, the bones connecting the ankle bones to the toes. They’re a common source of pain because they support your weight when you’re standing, walking and running.

Metatarsalgia is symptomatic of many different conditions:

  • Loss of fibro-fatty padding that protects the balls of the feet
  • Capsulitis
  • Neuroma
  • Bursitis
  • Stress fracture
  • Sesamoiditis
  • Transfer overloading
  • Osteochondritis
  • Poor footwear

It is vital that the correct diagnosis is made to identify your condition so that a treatment plan can be followed to help alleviate your pain.

Metatarsalgia treatment may involve:

  • Ultrasound scan
  • MRI scan
  • CT scan
  • X ray
  • Steroid injection
  • Physiotherapy
  • Mechanical adjustment
  • Orthotics
  • Surgery
